30 day song challenge |
I did this on another website, that had this going on. It was fun and challenging, somewhat amazing too. Since the amp is back up and we have a master technician taking care of things now. Would anyone be up for doing a 30 day song challenge. We get 30 days to write, record and upload a song, (please don't use one you already have laying around). It doesn't have to be a masterpiece, just something to get things rolling along.
I'm going to start tonight on writing, a simple rock/pop style song, I'll try to get it written, recorded and mixed within 30 days.
week one write and work on arrangement
week two and three tracking
week four mixing.
anyone wanna give it a go ?

Sounds like fun, my good goat. I've got a wedding across the pond to attend in a couple of weeks, which'll punch a hole in my month, but I might be able to get away with it anyway.

Don't let something as trivial as a wedding get in the way, JK lol. Maybe we do one every month. I might even give out a prize. Like a mic or something.
My one thought is that I'll probably be sticking to electronic music... it's just too hard to do the guitar thing in this apartment we're in right now. Maybe I'll be looking for a way to mesh some vocals onto an electronic track, though!

anything is good, two chord song, EDM, Rap, whatever someone wants to write
Sounds good. May 15th. I'm running on schedule, sorta. I've all the song parts written, except the lyrics.
drums, bass and piano are tracked midi, I haven't committed them to audio yet. I have 2 guitar parts to record, an accordion part maybe, (now that I have my old one back). I'm keeping it simple so no bells and whistles, or scratching records stuff lol

its got to be like making a cake yea??
gonna go and get my ingredients now!!
hmm hmm I like cake. Cake is good.
Let's bake.some cake,
.not a single remake,
the music must be cooking inside.
We must pick and choose,
the best ingredients to use,
and mix it well within time.
...............
Got carried away, I'm in a lyric mode of mind.

What's the cure for getting a melody out of my head now that I'm done writing it...
It's great, so it's a good problem to have, but I got more things to do today and I can't with this senseless need to play the WIP track over and over
I think lyrics for my thing are off the table. I suppose it's conceivable to still add them but I went full throttle on an instrumental once I saw how dry the lyrics were shaping up to be. Sometimes the music just does a better job communicating the vibe.
That said, maybe I'll keep at it and come up with some "honorary lyrics" that might have been.

You don't have to have lyrics, or vocals. A simple instrumental melody is fine.
I've decided to do all my recording for this song using the $79.00 US Behringer Audio interface. No outboard audio gear, other than a cheap Chinese Avlex mic. A cheap line 6 midi controller keyboard controller for the VSTI. Cheap headphones and computer speakers to mix with. It'll probably come out bad, but I'm going to have fun working at it.

Hey, the fun is what it's all about.
Lyrics would still have been great, I just couldn't make it work this particular time. I probably tried to come at it too on-the-nose. The thing felt melodramatic, which was a sign I didn't have the right words yet. There's a big plane ride between me and this wedding I'm attending, so we'll see if I can't dream up another attempt at words, but there's not much to hold out for.
Doing my tweaks and rhythm fixes, but the travel lappy doesn't have the horsepower to run a heavy project without freezing every track after every edit. Once I get back I'll have a few days before the 15th to finalize!

major computer malfunction |
my main SSD went down.. I've been rebuilding files for the last 2 days. Can't find the project file it's not in the location I saved it in but, the SSD is corrupt so that might be part of it, it was the only thing I had been working on. I was able to find the midi drum loop though, So I'm gonna see if I can rebuild the song from just that. Re track everything, and remix it by the 15th .. yikes. Windows 7 started getting glitch with the new plug-ins and VSTi's. So while I was down I put in another SSD with Windows 10.. everything seems to be working great.. it was all just very time consuming.
Oh man. Redoing even simple things is like my #1 trigger to make me irrationally furious, to the point that I won't even try. Sorry to hear it.
I run an ongoing online backup of my stuff, but I admit that music project files often get excluded until they're done just to prevent it from slamming my bandwidth quota (yay alaska). That's pretty backwards of me, though.
Maybe I'll.... go add... my project to my backup right now...

I just started working on a song today! I'm thinking of adding lyrics or something..uploaded a draft!

doesn't look like I'm going to get it finished by today.. haha my own challenge and I may not make it.
Wahoo!!! got it done!! |
Sounds like a lot of us had workflow problems!!!
Blowing the cobwebs off and remembering what goes where.... I certainly did
Loved the challenge though .... Great fun!!!
Think i got about 90 seconds done ... no vocs
spent hours relearning elastic audio and channel stuff!
I have even got my head around the on off button!!
Thanks Mr Goat

Let's start another one. I had to retrack this one I'm still going to finish this one. Try to have it done this weekend some time. Let's do another 30 day challenge. Write a song and get it uploaded by June 15th. I'm going to try
I like it as an ongoing thing. It suits us a little better than the Battles right now.
Once we get it all going again. I'm checking on something now. When I get it established, giveaway prizes to winners is doable. I've got some workable ideas that'll work in every country, they'd just need a decent internet hookup
You are welcome my friend.
I didn't make the last 30 day challenge. I'm up for another starting ending on 7/16/2017. completely from scratch. (not the one I was working on) write record and hopefully finish this time.
anybody else in ?
anybody else in ?
I'm good for it. I've been starting a few new track ideas, several with a mellow vibe
I've got a general ideal, need to finish it up this week. Edit: I just finished writing all the parts tonight. Start recording tomorrow.
Excellent!
Do you find stuff changing to accommodate once you start recording or do things tend to hold together pretty well for you?

Mine is a pop song. I'm not good at pop songs. Should be interesting. I had a thought about the 30 day challenges. Most writers won't like it. Songs or noodles based around a particular theme, or emotion for that month.
It's feasible, although I guess some musical forms aren't as well suited to some themes. Although, I'd pay a little fistful of money to get a melancholic EDM experience, so if anybody's got that up their sleeve, you need to be uploading on or around June 15th!
I don't really know what to call anything I do, but this time anyway I'm leaving out my usual melodic component for the sake of getting it to be more of a mood piece.

Two hours to tweak out 1 short piano part today.. yikes. the song is melancholy, but not EDM. Although I could through in some 808 drums samples, and layer a bunch of synth parts over the top.
A good piece of progress anyway! In June+July, I'll be a little tied up with writing again, but it'd be nice to try and keep up with challenges anyway. It's been a winning idea so far!

I leave in two days for vacation, I wonder if I can get the lead and backing vocals tracked and mixed in by then, lol
Mm, coming down to the wire... here's to hoping the tracking phase goes nice and smooth! I don't suppose anybody would be too put off if you wanted to make up for the vacation interruption by posting a few days late, but I'm looking forward to our uploads one way or another!

Just remembered the enter battle option ... as you upload
I still see it ...
Maybe we should use it .... even though it probably holds to calendar month dates ?
Plus remember the votey star thing???
Well thats there too!!
Just a thought
Fish
I agree It's the way the amp was originally intended. I'll start entering the battle when I get a song finalized. I leave tomorrow, I'll have to finish this one after I get back. I'm going to upload another shot of it, with some vocal stuff on it.. It's not done though.

We need to get the minimum vote quantity brought down to something reasonable, but I agree that it would be nice.
If you think about it, I think having the challenges end mid way through the month is ideal. It gives people time to listen and vote before the current month ends, and if people want to post a few days early for whatever reason, it doesn't mess anything up this way.
The Battle thing |
I know we are not in in a bona fide battle at the moment... just testing the old stuff
but I have a few questions..
Who sees/collates any data created by the red stars??
Could that person please create a table of the data and show it to us?
Is it Kings? Or others?
Have any of us sent a message asking the 15 vote threshold to be reduced to say zero for now?
Who to send this message to?
I'll copy this post and post it elsewhere for response

Anybody planning something to post for this month?
I'm down for a bit, Had major surgery on my stomach muscles, they had ripped apart, had to have them sewn back together. I'll be down for a month or so. I can write but can't sing or put pressure against the muscles. As soon as I get things well I'll be back at it.
back on track |
I was down for 8 weeks. I just got a release off of 10lb lift and he said I could start singing but to be careful not to push real hard with my diaphragm at first. So I'm going to start back up on the song writing now.
Good news back news. Bad New::: I did something dumb and moved all my files off to another SSD. I thought the project would save everything. What I didn't remember was I was using quite a few VSTI's , I didn't save the file/sound settings in each VSTI. when I moved them I lost all the midi that was being stored within the VSTI, not in the DAW. Live and learn. I do have the main part of the projects so. I'll start building them back up. they just might not be exactly what I had before. The drum part was quite involved, that is going to be hard to reproduce.
Good news : I have upgraded all my analog gear The results are my vocals have never sounded better. So if you need some vocals done on a track hit me up.

Glad you're recovering. You've had a pretty wild few months from where I'm standing!

Yuck, sorry that happenedThe couple of times I've had that happen on a small scale (losing like one track's instrument) I almost took my eyes out with a spoon.

I went up to your soundcloud site. I have some of your albums on my playlist. They're great to drive around and listen too while at work.

Nice! Thank you, TG. If we're being honest, the car is where I spend the most time listening to them as well because I like to drive and think, so I'm happy to hear about that in particular!
There's this one particular part in my MegaMan X3 Zero cover where it sounds just like my car engine revving, and it would scare me every single time...
I posted a short clip of the song I lost, I would like some feedback on the vocals in the two short intro verses if you get a chance. Sometimes it is hard to be objective with your own voice. I can't tell if my voice sounds solid, or strong. It is going to take a full year to recover, according to the Dr.
Sorry, you do not have access to post...
