HAMMOND E100 series |
I was recently given a Hammond E100 series just because I am a keyboarder. Isnt that nice?
My car isn't in the garage now.
The organ is bit rusty and dusty but I think it works fine whe the winter is over

Step #1 |
First review:
I can switch on
Power lamp is on
Check of tubes => glowing is normal
Motor of tone generator is stuck
=> after turning by hand it slowly begins to work.
=> NOT DAMAGED (puuh)
The main work now is on the tone generator:
It has no oil and the suspension is resinified (right word?). Hammond oil is very expensive + shipping (100ml ~ $8) so I decided to do some researches in the internet and found a cheap mechanic oil in Germany with the same behaviour like the Hammond original oil. It costs about 3,- for 100ml. I ordered it yesterday and await delivery now
I've made some pics and will update this thread from time to time like a diary
Result: CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN!!!

Motor of the TWG (tone wheel generator) |
This is the heart of the beast. Born in 1968...

You can see the little oil cups on each end of the motor. The cups will have little spring loaded caps covering them.
Today I received the oil and some special cleaning and contact spray

WOW TK! This must be a dream come true for you! And recently Kings ran into a Hammond too... I wonder if I may be so lucky!
Have fun patching it up! And yeah let's hear it when it's ready!

first oiling. now wait one day.
almost 24 hours gone... Motor is running fine now, but TWG is groaning and moaning and screeching and not all keys make the proper note. Guess I must unmount the TWG and check every single tone wheel and its suspension
did clean the contacts in the sockets of the tubes. This fixed the scratching on the lower manual.
The TWG starts quietly now but after 5 secs it begins to screech again. Gave it some extra oil. And again wait a few days until oil is in every "crack"

Tone wheel generator |
it's WORKING!!!!
just a bit more oil and oil and oil and oil and oil and....
It purrs like a cat. Now I can start to clean the drawbars from scratching.

Cool I hope to hear some great John Lord and Rick Wakeman Tones from you soon.
Congrats to this "Schnaeppchen" , TK. .
There was the right man at the right place at the right time, it seems.
Are you successful with restaurating the old lady ?
I ask myself about the difference of a B3 and this E 100. Can you explain it an "organ-layman", please?

The difference between B3 and E100 |
well purists say that a Hammond is not a Hammond when it has not more than one power-on-switch.
B3, A100 and similar models need two switches to power up motor and voltage. This E100 has only ONE power switch. This starts everything in the organ even the motor of the tone wheel generator.
B3 models have this special percussion effects on the upper manual.
E100 has percussion effects too but they are quite different.
(I have an instruction for changing these percussions to make them B3 like)
B3 has a knob for vibrato and chorus effects.
E100 has some tounge switches to do the same behaviour on vibrato and chorus
B3 models have 10 presets for each keyboard (upper and lower).
E100 has only three presets.
Both models have drawbars.
The E100 has an electronic cymbal and brush generator which can be activated for the lower manual. Sounds like a cheap snare drum. B3 don't have it.
E100 has an electronic repetition unit for the percussion signals
What they have is this inimitable click when you press or release a key and the leakage of tones comming through when you play chords. Once this was a construction fault. But this is exactly what Hammond lovers want to hear. All is based on the tone wheel generator and their divider units.
There are some more other differences in the construction between the models.
I am just playing around with that lady and I will record some videos soon. The motor starts very smoothly now and the tone wheel generator works very quiet. It's great fun to play with it.
