Scattershot
New recording after being forced to take a few weeks off due to personal health issues.

It's a little all-over-the-place (hence the name) but I'm excited to share it with you fine folks all the same.

Special props to my buddy Karl who laid down a wicked solo from 1:48-2:10. Otherwise, this is all me.

Lyrics:

Shorty, you have weapons and you use them without hesitation.
Don't pretend you're helpless when you're not.
You've taken something that you never had a right to ask for
A girl like you gets everything she wants.

You are only offering your hand because you want to prove you can care for someone other than yourself.
Or maybe I am just a lucky sucker, in the right place at the wrong time.

And you know that you could tell me anything at all that's on your mind.
I have always been here to support you.
You tell me that you miss me and I really wish I could believe you,
But I recall the last time.

You have nothing you could offer.
I've already offered more.
This is how I'm really feeling, if you're wondering.

Woman this is something I don't want to have to say again.
You're going to have to trust me if we're ever going to act as friends.
And words are not enough,
I want your actions to agree with them.
You can't just ask me to believe you.

I remember thinking you were different than the ones before you.
Don't go proving my suspicions wrong.

I'm sorry for the things I say.
Sometimes I speak before we think.
Should think I would have learned by now,
But I'm still figuring out what drives me.

My mind is there with you.
You're the only place I am.
My lungs they burn for you.
Its forever.

I can hear a mix of several genres of metal in that song. The vocals are not really my taste but what makes this a great song is that there is something in there that just about any metal/hard rock fan will enjoy.

Great job.

Whats your recording set up like?

As always this is such a complex and tricky composition again.
This genremix of prog rock, metal and post rock is quite unique, it´s YOUR ´label´ / ´brand´.
Git solo´s great. Chant also.

I like the change at 2.50, there is a nice amount of space/breath, the change is good, perhaps you should do more of it in your compositions, or allow more space in your mixes - it's just opinion or more to the point my personal preference. At the end of the day it's your music and you should do what you feel/think is right for you.

Your compositions are always well thought out, well performed and structured, I would however like you to try and create different sounds and rhythms, experiment see where it takes you, hence your songs do have similarities. I sense if you can do this you will become a household name..

Great work - Keep it up!!

PS: Was you unwell when you produced this, or have you just recovered?

@phantomotaku: Thanks mate. My recording setup on this song consisted of 2 guitars (8-string LTD SC-608B, 6-string Music Man John Petrucci), a Music Man Stingray Bass, a Shure KSM32 vocal mic, Axiom Pro 61 keyboard, and lots of software plugs - Steven Slate Drums 4, Native Instruments Session Strings Pro, Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5 (used on both guitars and bass guitar), then some Fab Filter compression and EQ plugs. I have some more info on my gear on my website if you're curious: http://briandavidvaughn.com/gear

Thanks ULI.

@Denis: You're right man I don't vary my dynamics much in some of my tunes. With this recording, I kind of took an approach of... record whatever came into my head as it came, even if it sounded weird. That's why the song kind of jumps around a lot, but I think it turned out kind of neat even if the transitions are a bit rough from place to place. As for your question, I am just recovering. I started losing my voice early/mid December and lost it completely by January. Some kind of odd acid reflux issue that the docs don't know what caused yet. Anyway, I had to basically take a month off from singing (and even a week or two off from talking). Now that the issue is mostly gone, I'm finding that my range and control aren't what they were. Guess I've lost some conditioning. The vocals in this song were kind of... meh. But it'll come back in time I suppose.

I really like your vocal tracks. Very expressive. They support the song's mood.

The production is very good. The music is not exactly my type; it kinda reminded me of Linkin Park or some screamo bands. The voice is good but I don't like the style, although it fits perfectly in the song.
I really don't have much to add since it's really well mixed, arranged and produced.
Good job.

I'd like to think I'm edging closer to prog. rock with some metal influence than screamo, but... lol, I guess it is what it is.

Cheers and thanks for the kind words.
